The top sale in the Christie’s auction of the Baio Collection was a record for a Eugene Atget print. The print of Atget’s Joueur d’Orgue, which realized $686,500, benefited from an interesting provenance, excellent printing and its status among Atget’s oeuvre. From a series of photographs Atget took of Paris tradespeople and published as postcards, the image of an organ grinder and a smiling girl is printed on gelatin silver chloride paper, and was part of a 1999 Christie’s auction of Atget prints from the estate of Tristan Tzara. A writer and poet who lived near Atget, Tzara is believed to have acquired this and 12 other Atget prints that were held by his estate directly from Atget.
